Meeting Summary
2000 Meeting Overview:
The Blending Clinical Practice and Research: Forging Partnerships to Enhance Drug Addiction Treatment conference was held from November 1-2, 2000, in Los Angeles, California. It provided an important opportunity for clinicians and researchers to examine cutting-edge scientific findings about drug abuse and addiction and the application of these findings to clinical practice, and to determine additional areas in need of research. The National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) partners for this conference included: UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Program, the Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The conference included a morning presentation by NIDA’s Director, Dr. Alan I. Leshner, regarding Putting Drug Abuse Research to Use in Real-Life Settings. This was followed by a presentation on Bridging the Disconnect between Research and Practice, which discussed how the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) plans to take action.
Teams of clinicians and researchers then conducted workshops addressing the following topics:
- Drugs, the Brain, and Behavior
- Effectiveness of Treatment
- Innovations in Behavioral Therapy
- Innovations in Medications Development for Addiction
- Strategies for Working with Cultural Issues/Special Populations
- Co-Occurring Disorders
