Meeting Summary

2002 Meeting Overview:

The Blending Clinical Practice and Research: Forging Partnerships to Enhance Drug Addiction Treatment conference was held March 14-15 in New York, New York, and brought together over 800 professionals in the field of drug abuse and addiction studies.  The event was sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in collaboration with the New York and Long Island nodes of the Clinical Trials Network (CTN), the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, the Northeast Addiction Technology Transfer Centers, the New York State Practice Improvement Collaborative, and the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers of New York State.

The conference included both plenary presentations and workshops led by nationally recognized specialists. Subject matter focused on new developments in research and how to translate findings to community-based settings.  Clinicians and researchers were given the unique opportunity to examine the most up-to-date data on addiction and drug abuse, as well as help determine additional areas of concern in the field.

In his morning address on Day 1, Dr. Glen Hanson discussed major advances in drug addiction research and showed how those findings will help improve drug addiction treatment via a "blending" of practice and research. This was followed by a 2-panel session entitled “Building Bridges Between Practice and Research,” which included discussions regarding NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network (CTN) along with the New York Blending Project. The afternoon Keynote Presentation by Dr. Herbert D. Kleber addressed both advances in substance abuse treatment and obstacles to adequate implementation.  This was followed by a series of 16 concurrent workshops covering a wide range of topics, from Club Drugs to Gender Issues in Substance Abuse.

Day two began with a Plenary session led by Mr. John J. Coppola and Keynote speakers Drs. David Vlahov and Benjy J. Primm.  The remainder of the day was dedicated to 12 additional breakout workshops and a final Plenary session chaired by Drs. Michael Flaherty and Gail Viamonte.
