Meeting Summary
2006 Meeting Overview:
This two-day conference held October 16-17, 2006 in Seattle, Washington provided an important opportunity for clinicians and providers to interact with the developers of empirically supported treatments in awareness-raising workshops focused on treatment implementation.
The meeting included a plenary presentation each morning (delivered by Drs. Nora Volkow and A. Thomas McLellan, respectively). The event also incorporated an afternoon presentation by Dr. Mary Jeanne Kreek regarding the genetics of addiction, and the Eileen Pencer Memorial Lecture, delivered by Ms. Jeanne Obert of the Matrix Institute. A total of 24 breakout sessions were conducted as well.
This activity was planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health/Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (NIH/FAES), The University of Washington, and Oregon Health & Science University.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of this year’s Blending Addiction Science & Practice Conference was to improve addiction treatment practices to enable more individuals to recover from addiction disorders.
The objectives were:
- To enhance bi-directional communication between drug abuse and addiction researchers and community treatment providers.
- To increase drug abuse and addiction practitioner’s level of knowledge regarding NIDA’s research.
- To increase awareness, knowledge and use of the Blending Team Products.
- To advance the exchange of ideas among drug abuse and addiction professionals.
- To guide drug abuse and addiction practitioners to additional resources for knowledge and skill development of science-based practices.
- To increase the dissemination of science-based practices for the treatment of drug abuse and addictive disorders.
