New Behavioral Sciences Research Branch Chief Named

Dr. Jaylan S. Turkkan has joined NIDA as chief of the Behavioral Sciences Research Branch in the Division of Basic Research where she oversees a portfolio of animal and human research on behavioral and physiological factors related to substance abuse. The Behavioral Sciences Research Branch replaced the Behavioral Pharmacology Branch under a NIDA reorganization last December. Dr. Turkkan plans to broaden the new branch's research to examine various aspects of drug abuse, such as craving and withdrawal, using behavioral models from emerging areas of cognitive and social psychology.

Dr. Turkkan comes to NIDA from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she was an associate professor of behavioral biology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Turkkan received her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the City University of New York and pursued postdoctoral research in the neurosciences at Johns Hopkins. She has published more than 60 articles and book chapters on a wide range of research in behavioral physiology and behavioral medicine.
