Three new members have been approved by Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Donna E. Shalala to join NIDA's National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse. The Council oversees the Institute's programs and provides scientific and policy direction to NIDA. It meets three times a year and conducts the final review of NIDA grant applications. Members include experts in health and scientific disciplines related to drug abuse, public policy, health policy, law, economics, and management.
The new members are:
- Dr. Susan G. Amara, a professor at the Vollum Institute, School of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland;
- Dr. Morton E. Goldberg, a consultant in drug discovery and development from Wilmington, Delaware; and
- Dr. Clyde B. McCoy, a professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
In addition, Dr. A. Thomas McLellan, a professor in the Center for Studies of Addiction at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, was reappointed to the Council.
