Under the Federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) Program, small businesses can compete for grants to develop promising ideas that meet specific research and development needs of Federal agencies, including NIDA. The SBIR program is targeted at small businesses. The STTR program is aimed at collaborations between small businesses and nonprofit research institutions. Both programs provide initial, Phase I funds for companies to begin to explore the scientific, technical, and commercial feasibility of their proposed products. Phase II grants are available for companies to expand on early results and further develop promising products. Developers then must obtain funds from other sources to commercialize their products.
Additional information about NIDA's SBIR and STTR programs, including current research topics, online applications, and links to other information sources, can be found on NIDA's Web page at www.drugabuse.gov under "Funding."
