The Addiction Performance Project was designed to help clinicians care for patients with drug abuse and addiction. Each performance includes a dramatic reading of Act III of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night by award-winning professional actors. The reading is followed by a brief expert panel reaction and facilitated audience discussion. Topics may include:
- the challenges and opportunities in caring for drug-addicted patients,
- provider biases, and
- how best to incorporate screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment.
NIDA completed 16 APP events at medical schools and professional conferences in cities across America from 2011-2013. Lead actresses included Debra Winger, Blythe Danner, Kathryn Erbe, Mare Winningham, and Kathleen Chalfant. All performances were free of charge and open to the public.
