Dr. Wilson Compton speaking: Monitoring the Future survey is our longest continuously conducted survey of drug use among youth in America.
Every year researchers from the University of Michigan with funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse go out to several hundred schools all across the country - both public and private schools, they provide questionnaires to over 40,000 in the 8th, 10th, and 12th grade every year.
Monitoring the Future Survey started in 1975 and has been conducted every year since that time.
From ‘75 through 1991 they just interviewed 12th graders, so it really was looking at the end of high school but starting in 1992 and for every year since that time they've interviewed 8th, 10th and 12th graders.
So, we can get an accurate snapshot of how much drug use there is in youth in America.
